About the country

Costa Rica is a progressive Central American country with a population of approximately 5.2 million people, the majority of whom live in urban areas. Education is highly valued, with a literacy rate of 97% and free primary and secondary education for all citizens. The official language in the country is Spanish. According to UNESCO, over 50% of children in Costa Rica end primary schooling without attaining minimum proficiency levels in reading. The situation is more drastic in math where only 20% of learners achieve the mark.
