About the country

Pakistan is a very large South Asian country with a population of approximately 239 million people. It has one of the highest birth rates at 22 per 1,000 people. 


Pakistan has 10 cities with populations exceeding 10 million. Karachi and Lahore are the two largest. Islamabad is the capital. The largest ethnic groups are Punjabi, Pashtuns, and Sindhis. Punjabi is the most populous language at 48%. Urdu is the national local language, but it is only spoken as a first language by 3% of the population. English is the official government language. According to UNESCO, only 7.5% of children complete primary education having attained minimum proficiency levels in mathematics.

The Age of Learning Foundation offers one program in Pakistan, our Educational TV initiative, which is focused on accelerating English language learning for young children via television.
